9.27Chords can be chosen for voice leading

Suppose you want:

C → Dm

You could insert:

C♯°

So:

C → C♯° → Dm

Listen to the chromatic bass:

C → C♯ → D

The passing chord creates smooth motion.

This is one reason diminished chords are so useful.
