A. Common-tone drill

Practice:

C → Am

F → Dm

G → Em

Dm7 → F

Keep shared notes whenever possible.

B. Guide tones

Play only the 3rd and 7th of:

Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

Then transpose to G and F.

C. Shells

Practice:

root + 3rd + 7th

for:

Cmaj7, Dm7, G7, Am7, E7, A7

D. Top-note control

Create voicings for:

C → Am → F → G7 → C

C → Am → F → G7 → C

with melody:

E → E → F → F → E

E → E → F → F → E

E. Bass line

Create a descending bass under a progression using inversions.

Aim for at least four consecutive stepwise notes.

F. Chromatic inner voice

Practice:

C → E7 → Am

listening to:

G → G♯ → A

G → G♯ → A

Then:

Am → A7 → Dm

Am → A7 → Dm

listening to:

C → C♯ → D

C → C♯ → D

G. Record

Take one 8-bar melody and record:

  1. basic block-chord version
  2. smooth voice-led version

Listen without watching the keyboard.

The difference should be obvious.
