Suppose melody note is F over Cmaj7.

Cmaj7 contains E.

F against E creates a minor second.

That can be beautiful or harsh depending on placement.

Possible strategies:

• omit E
• place E far below F
• interpret as Cmaj11-like color
• change harmony

This is where voicing matters as much as theoretical chord compatibility.
