64.2Why pentatonic sounds so open
Notice what is missing from C major scale:
F and B.
Those are important because they contain the tritone:
F-B.
They strongly define functional movement and tension.
Remove them and the pitch collection becomes:
- open
- consonant
- less functionally urgent
- easy to superimpose
That is one reason pentatonics are so useful over modal harmony.
