When improvising over a difficult chord, you do not have to think from largest to smallest.

Try:

1. Target note

then:

2. Three-note motif

then:

3. Triad

then:

4. Pentatonic

only then perhaps:

5. Full seven-note scale.

Often you will never need level 5.
